Our team at Kalberer Construction knows you care about your landscape, and we want to help you keep it looking great. We primarily focus on the hardscaping elements of landscape design, and we have the right experience to install, repair, and maintain your patios, retaining walls, walkways, and more.
In this article, we will focus on stone walkways in particular. We’d like to share a few key tips for keeping your stone walkways in pristine condition.
- Clean them regularly. One thing you can do to keep your stone walkways in great condition in the long term is keep them clean. We recommend cleaning your walkways regularly to remove dirt, grime, and other damaging contaminants such as mold. Pressure washing is an effective method for outdoor cleaning, but you can also use a sponge or brush and a good masonry cleaner.
- Get rid of weeds. Another thing you can do to maintain your stone walkways is to keep an eye out for weeds and pull them up as soon as they appear. If you let weeds take root around or in the cracks in your walkways, they will do damage to the stone. Plant roots will suck moisture out of the stone, causing it to become brittle, and the growth of the roots and stem can force stones apart. Pulling up weeds promptly will help prevent this process and keep your walkway intact.
- Re-seal the walkway. Stone walkways are naturally porous, so they need to be coated in a waterproof seal to remain in good condition. Our team seals all our stone walkways as part of the installation process, but you will need to get your walkway re-sealed every few years to maintain that protective layer.
