Fire pits are just one of our many areas of expertise here at Kalberer Construction. If you want to give your landscape a natural focal point and the perfect place to gather with loved ones in the evenings, you can have us add a custom fire pit to your design.
Although fire pits can be beautiful additions to any yard, they do pose some inherent risks, so we have put together this article to explain how to use them safely. Here are some key safety tips to keep in mind whenever you’re around fire pits:
- Keen an extinguisher within reach. When using fire pits, always have a way to extinguish the fire close at hand. We recommend buying a fire extinguisher and keeping it close by your fire pit, but you can also use water, dirt, or sand to put out the flames.
- Never leave the fire unattended. Our second tip for using fire pits safely is to always have an adult watching the fire. When the flames are lit, the fire pit should never be left unattended.
- Only burn wood. While it might seem fun to burn cardboard, trash, or other items in your fire pit, burning these things can release toxic chemicals into the air, which is bad for the environment and bad for anyone who breathes them in. This is especially important if you plan to cook food over your fire pit.
- Roll up sleeves and tie back hair. The last fire pit safety tip we’ll cover here is to secure loose clothing and tie back your hair whenever you’re near fire pits; especially before stoking the fire or adding more wood. Loose sleeves and hair can quickly catch fire, which could result in serious injuries.
